America, Of Course: An Transgender Woman Condemns Violence

Violence must be condemned. I condemn it. Of course I do.

Yet gun violence is not a problem in my life because I am transgender. Rather, gun violence is a problem in my life because I am an American.

Most mass shootings (by far) are committed by White Cisgender Men (97.7%). Only a few (3-4 individuals) in the past few years have been done by trans people. Statistically, transgender people are much much LESS likely to engage in gun violence compared to cisgender people. We have more reason to fear cisgender people than transgender people.

Why are we hearing politicians and influencers calling for government to remove even more rights from trans people? It is not because we are dangerous. It is because this is what they have been doing anyway and recent violence is simply being used to further their hateful goals. I have more reason to fear a Republican than transgender people.

As a survivor of a relationship with a narcissist, I know these tactics: Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender (DARVO). The pathological compulsion of a narcissist is to blame and control others. Any fault in the narcissist will be denied. Any fault in the victim will be exploited and weaponized. Transphobes, authoritarians, and anti-transgender influencers follow these narcissistic patterns. The goal is always to blame and control transgender people. The anti-trans methodology is reality distortion.

I am a transgender woman in America. And I condemn the 3-4 shootings committed by trans people. But moreover I condemn the thousands of mass shootings in the past few years committed by White Cisgender Men. No, I do not feel shame because I am transgender. I feel shame because I am an American in a country terrorized by violence. I condemn it. Of course I do.
