I am revulsed by such a thing. Such language in an academic setting is inexcusable, even in jest. I am sorry it was allowed and that it occurred.Tom Delfsnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5353507501281610159.post-54825047780302006072019-02-20T23:48:32.452-08:002019-02-20T23:48:32.452-08:00What an excellent post. I name (in brief) several different traditions of how castrates are managed in different contexts that nonetheless share common themes. There are some medieval discourses that view eunuchs/castrati/etc. as feminine and others as hyper masculine. Within the genre of castrates we find many sub genres of embodiment and culture. But that gets away from the main argument of this piece. If you would like to know more about medieval castrates, Castration and Culture in the Middle Ages by Larissa Tracy is an excellent recent text with a useful bibliography. I have a forthcoming article on castrates but the publication date is fuzzy right now. Best wishes!Dr. M.W. I'm wondering how much the views prevalent in medieval Christendom are descended from Roman attitudes towards middle eastern civilizations, which they viewed as effeminate.Cherylhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09328347167113836522noreply@blogger.com
